The Benefits of Baby Massage: Nurturing Touch for Your Little One

Did you know that massaging your baby is a powerful way to bond and support their overall development?! Here are some key benefits we think you might love to know!

1.  It's For Mum and Bub!

Baby massage fosters a deep connection between you and your baby and it’s even been shown to reduce stress hormone levels in parents in the postpartum season!

Gentle touch and eye contact during massage enhances emotional bonding, ultimately strengthening your relationship. It’s a nurturing interaction that helps your baby feel loved and secure, while promoting their emotional development.

2.  Better Relaxation, Better Sleep!

Dim the lights, pop on some relaxing music and warm up the oil, because who doesn't love a little pampering?! It’s a great way to regularly help your baby relax and unwind, especially after a bath, making it easier for them to fall asleep and hopefully stay asleep longer.

Your soothing strokes will help stimulate the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep as well as help reduce baby’s cortisol levels (stress and anxiety)!

3.  Supports Physical Development and Health

Gently massaging your little one will stimulate blood circulation and lymphatic flow, which can boost their immune system and promote healthy growth. Massage has been shown to improve brain development and learning capacity. It also helps with muscle tone and coordination, aiding in their physical development.

It’s a great way to help calm your baby down and provide pain relief too; gentle abdominal massage can even relieve common issues like colic, gas, and constipation!

4.  Parental Confidence Boost

It’s a wonderful way to help you learn about your baby's cues and responses, ultimately giving you more confidence in your daily care routine. Feeling calm and relaxed together, will help you feel more connected and attuned to their needs.

Tips To Get Started: Begin by choosing a calm, quiet environment and a time when your baby is content and alert. Some of the best times include: about 45 minutes after eating, right before bed or after a nappy change.

Use a gentle, natural oil like coconut oil. Start with light strokes on your baby's legs and gradually move to the arms, chest, and back. Massage their tummy in a clockwise motion, the same way the digestive system moves. Always watch for your baby's reactions and stop if they seem uncomfortable.

Most importantly, keep it simple. Baby massage doesn’t have to be perfectly executed to be effective. Relax, have fun and enjoy bonding with your little one!
