A Step-by-Step Nappy Changing Guide for New Parents

Changing your baby’s nappy may seem daunting at first, but with a little practice (and a few deep breaths), you’ll be a pro in no time. Whether you’re preparing for your newborn’s arrival or just need a refresher, this guide covers everything you need to know—including tips for boys and girls.

Why Nappy Changing Matters

Keeping your baby clean and dry is essential for their health and comfort. Regular nappy changes help prevent nappy rash, irritation, and discomfort, ensuring your baby stays happy and content.

What You’ll Need

Before you start, make sure you have everything ready:

- A clean nappy (disposable or reusable - opt for gentle, non-toxic, rash-free nappies like Cuddlies Bamboo Eco Nappies)

- Baby wipes or a damp washcloth (opt for gentle, non-toxic wipes like Cuddlies Bamboo Water Wipes)

- Nappy rash cream (if needed)

- A changing mat or soft, clean surface

- A spare set of clothes (just in case!)

Step-by-Step Guide to Changing a Nappy

1. Prepare the Changing Area

Set up a clean, safe space for the nappy change. A changing table or a mat on the floor works well. Ensure all supplies are within arm’s reach—never leave your baby unattended.

2. Lay Your Baby Down

Gently lay your baby on their back, keeping one hand on them for safety. If it’s a messy nappy, place a cloth or extra baby wipes nearby to catch any surprises.

3. Remove the Dirty Nappy

  • Undo the tabs or fasteners of the soiled nappy.
  • Lift your baby’s legs gently by the ankles and slide the dirty nappy out. Use the front of the nappy to wipe off any excess mess.
  • Fold the dirty nappy and set it aside (use a nappy bin or bag).
  • Tip: Reduce waste with Cuddlies Eco Nappies by disposting responsibly - cut off the waist band tabs and dispose the nappy in a biodegradable bag and throw in the bin. Avoid placing the dirty nappy in plastic bin bags. We do not recommend home composting of nappies.

4. Clean Your Baby

  • Use baby wipes or a damp cloth to clean the area thoroughly. Always wipe front to back to prevent infections, especially for girls.
  • Ensure all creases and folds are clean and dry to avoid irritation.

5. Apply Nappy Cream (Optional)

If your baby’s skin is prone to irritation or redness, apply a thin layer of nappy rash cream.

6. Put on the Clean Nappy

  • Slide the new nappy under your baby, with the tabs at the back.
  • For boys: Point the genitals downward to prevent leaks.
  • Bring the front of the nappy up and secure the tabs snugly but not too tight. You should be able to fit two fingers between the nappy and your baby’s tummy.

7. Dispose of the Dirty Nappy

Place the soiled nappy and used wipes in a designated nappy bin or bag. If using reusable nappies, follow the care instructions for washing. Tip: If you use Cuddlies eco bamboo nappies, dispose of it for optimal biodegradability by simply cutting off the tabs and placing it in the bin or in a biodegradable bag! We don't recommend home composting of nappies.

8. Wash Your Hands

Always wash your hands thoroughly after changing a nappy to keep everything hygienic.

Tips for Nappy Changing Boys vs. Girls

Changing a Boy’s Nappy

  • Be prepared for potential "fountain surprises"! Keeping a wipe handy to cover the area can save you from unexpected sprays.
  • Always ensure the genitals are pointed downward before fastening the nappy to prevent leaks.

Changing a Girl’s Nappy

  • Always wipe front to back to prevent bacteria from entering the urethra and causing infections.
  • Take extra care to clean between the skin folds gently but thoroughly.

How Often Should You Change a Nappy?

Newborns typically need their nappies changed every 2-3 hours, or as soon as they are soiled. Wet nappies may not always be obvious, so check regularly to keep your baby dry and comfortable.

Cuddlies eco nappies feature a handy wetness indicator, so you’ll always know when it’s time for a change!
